Saints release LB Victor Butler and Others

vbutlerOne year ago, the New Orleans Saints signed veteran linebacker Victor Butler with the hope he could rejuvenate their defense. He has yet to play a single down for the Saints, with many speculating on when he would make his ‘big impact’.

However, according to Kristian Garic of 870 WWL in New Orleans, the Saints were planning to release Butler as part of their league-mandated cuts to get the roster size down to 75 by Tuesday. In June 2013, Butler suffered a torn ACL after he ran into RB Mark Ingram during practice.  He was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list where he would remain for the rest of the season.  Butler returned to practice on Monday after missing the majority of training camp with an undisclosed injury.

After initial reports of the impending release of Butler, his departure was reported on Twitter along with several other cuts by the Saints. The move to release Butler saves the Saints $1.5 million this season.

Other roster cuts include:

——————————-

DE – Chidera Uzo-Diribe
TE – Je’Ron Hamm
RB – Tim Flanders
WR – Tobias Plamer
WR – Andy Tanner
S – Ty Zimmerman
T – Ty Nsekhe
T – Manase Foketi
TE – Travis Beckum

——————————-

More cuts are expected as the Saints trim down to 75 players on their roster, and then must make the next round of cuts down to the 53 man roster in the very near future.
